Originating from ancient salt firing techniques from as early as the 13th century, where potters introduced salt to create a glassy residual coating, soda firings were discovered in the 1970’s, here in the US, as a way to bypass the health risks that the vapors from salt firing process exposed potters to. The unique flashing (hotspots of mineral deposit exposure) created a new surface treatment resulting in gorgeous, uncontrolled coloring to the ceramic body.
